News

The highlight this newsletter is undoubtedly the recent release of the CD "Silbury Air" by ABC Classics. The recording was performed by the Alpha Ensemble with myself conducting following a concert of the same works on the 31st of July 1998. The hardest piece was the title work by Harrison Birtwistle - easily the most difficult fifteen minutes I have ever conducted. The players did a brilliant job with this project, and I shall count the CD as one of my most important achievements in 20th century music. In my horn-playing days I performed the Banks horn trio and had the priviledge of rehearsing it with the composer present. I am very glad to be associated with another work of this fine Australian composer, the "Sonata da Camera". This month includes some sessions with the SSO and a couple of band clinics in Brisbane. Otherwise I am pressing on with the symphony for the University Of Georgia.
